Classic Cars at Charterhouse

The Charterhouse February classic car auction at The Royal Bath & West Showground was another great success with over £200,000 worth of vehicles sold. “The classic car and motorcycle market continues to be very buoyant with vehicles selling above estimate. ” Commented Matthew Whitney. “With interest rates remaining low in savings accounts, many of our clients would much rather put the money into a classic which they can now enjoy, take to shows, or pop down to the pub on a Sunday. Put simply, you get plenty of smiles for miles with classics! “A 1925 Riley 12hp four seater sports tourer was the star car at the auction. Sold for a client in Poole, it went to a car collector near Bridport for £36,000 after a bidding war against a specialist car museum in Devon. Elsewhere in the auction, a one family owned 1958 MG Magnette, which had been stored for many years in a barn that had become overgrown with brambles sold very well. Needing total restoration, it was pulled out of hiding and sold for £3,500. With Summer due sometime later this year, a 1961 Morris Minor convertible, adapted from a saloon, also sold well to a Norfolk bidder at £9,000, a 1923 Maxwell tourer, being sold for a client in Surrey, sold for £8,700, a 1962 Morris Mini-Minor which had only had one lady owner from new, sold for its Kent owner at £7,600.However, perhaps one of the more unusual lots in the Charterhouse auction was a 1983 Leyland Titan double decker bus. Having covered more miles than you will ever have hot dinners, it sold for a client in Cyprus bidding live on the internet, for £4,000.Charterhouse is now accepting for their forthcoming Spring auctions including medals, militaria, coins, stamps & other collectors items on Friday 14th March, followed by classic cars and motorcycles on Sunday 6th April and an auction of pictures, prints and books also in April. For further information regarding these auctions, or to arrange a home visit, please contact Matthew Whitney, Associate Director at Charterhouse, The Long Street Salerooms, Sherborne, Dorset 01935 812277 www.charterhouse-auction.com or via email on info@charterhouse-auction.com1925 Riley 25hp sold for £36,0001958 MG Magnette, as discovered by Charterhouse, sold for £3,6001983 Leyland Titan bus, sold to a buyer in Cyprus for £4,0001961 Morris Minor convertible sold for £9,000 For further information regarding this article, please contact Richard Bromell, Director

Delightful Deco Dining Room Suite Tops Auction

The lot which travelled the furthest to the Charterhouse auction on Friday 18th January proved to be the top lot of the day, despite the weather. “As a company we travel extensively throughout the country, not only just within the immediate locality and the top lot Art Deco dining room suite we sold was consigned to us from a client in Essex. ” Commented Richard Bromell. “Admittedly when I woke on the Friday auction morning to see nothing but snow I was a little concerned. However, the first buyer into the saleroom travelled up from Devon and after that it was business as usual. This, combined with a large amount of telephone bids and buyers bidding extensively on line through via the internet, resulted in a great day! “The suite comprises a dining table, a set of 6 chairs with cloud shaped backs, a serving table and, of course, a cocktail cabinet. The high Art Deco design of the suite probably dates it to around 1930. Today suites which include all the main parts, are hotly contested, with the Charterhouse suite selling for £6,600. Also from the same client, was a similar nest of tables which amazed everyone when they sold for £1,100.February is another busy month at Charterhouse as they have their auction of classic cars and motorcycles on Sunday 10th at Shepton Mallet, closely followed by an auction of silver, jewellery, coins, watches & antiques on Thursday 14th & Friday 15th February. Recipe for Success at Charterhouse

An old hand written recipe book is to go under the Charterhouse hammer on Friday 11th April. “There is phenomenal interest in old recipe and cookery books, with celebrity chefs such as Heston Blumenthal trying recipes or taking inspiration from them to create wonderful new dishes. ” Commented Richard Bromell. “However, the recipes are not only for food, but for curing all sorts of ailments and painful dispositions, like a medical recipe book too. No doubt some of these recipes had an effect, but whether it was good or bad we will never know, but I certainly fancy some of the tasty pudding recipes! “The hand written book dates to the 18th century and is a compilation of recipes. Included are Lady Russel’s recipe For a Giddiness or Pain in the Head, Mrs Snellings recipe to make Hoggs Liver Puddings, and there is even Lord Pembroke’s recipe to make Port Wine, which seems to be an extravagant recipe including 8 gallons of genuine wine, 40 gallons of cyder (sic) along with some French Brandy! However, perhaps one recipe which is not for the feint hearted is Dr Waddenfield’s Remedy for Lunacy, which states it cured a Person of Quality!!Charterhouse is now accepting for their forthcoming spring auctions including a sale of pictures, prints, books and antiques on Friday 11th April and classic cars and motorcycles at The Royal Bath & West Showground on Sunday 6th April.
