Although the sun is out the team of specialists at Charterhouse have pulled together another amazing array of lots for their August auctions with specialist sales of motorcycles, silver, jewellery, watches and country house interiors.
“It has been full on during the warm weather this year.” Commented Richard Bromell. “My favourite appointment was to meet client to view at his motorcycle collection which was stored at the Top Gear race track near Guildford, but sadly it was not on a filming day!”
First up for the Charterhouse August
auction is a sale dedicated to classic, race and vintage motorcycles. This is being held at the prestigious Haynes International Motor Museum at Sparkford on Saturday 10th where the motorcycles will be sold from 1.00pm.
Highlights of this specialist auction are a 1955 Vincent Black Prince at £60,000-70,000, the ex-Arthur Wheeler1954 Italian 250 GP winning Moto Guzzi £35,000-40,000, a 1962 Honda CD110 50cc production racer, which revs to a stratospheric 13,500 rpm at £30,000-35,000, along with various other marques including Kawasaki, Triumph, Yamaha, Suzuki, Matchless, BSA and many others.
This is then followed on Thursday 15th August with a specialist auction devoted to silver, watches and jewellery.
Amongst the hundreds of lots of silver it is a pair of early George II cast silver candlesticks at £1,000-1,500 which catches the eye. Whilst there is nothing particularly different about their design or manufacture, it is the makers which makes them very unusual. Made by Ann Craig and John Neville, it is a rare teaming up of silversmiths as Ann was one of the very few lady silversmiths to produce wares in the 18th century.
Perhaps the lot which shines the brightest in the jewellery is a whopping three stone diamond ring. With the three diamonds weighing in at over 7ct this is estimated at £11,000-13,000. Elsewhere there are other rings, brooches, bracelets, chains and other jewellery estimated from £50 to several £1,000’s.
In the watch section, there is a large selection of gold and stainless steel wrist and pocket watches. Here there is plenty of choice of Cartier, Breitling, Omega and other premium brands estimated up to £2,000.
The next day, Friday 16th August, Charterhouse finishes off its August run of auctions with country house antiques and interiors.
One of the larger items here is a Steinway grand piano at £1,000-2,000. In a rosewood case, this comes to Sherborne from a large country house in Cornwall where is has been enjoyed by generations of the same family, albeit with a little help as a family member very helpfully put stickers on the keys to remind budding pianists which notes the keys played.
Also with a country house look, are a group of late 19th century Black Forest wood carvings. With typical bear carved decoration there is a smoker’s stand, which incorporates a musical box at £600-800 and an unusual and very decorative pair of cared wood dogs also at £600-800.
