Stamps

DepartmentSell SomethingSelling with CharterhouseWhere to Find Us
We see 1000’s of stamps every month. Clients regularly bring in or post single us albums, boxes and complete collections of stamps for valuation. We see modern presentation packs, booklets of stamps, mint, used and postal history from the 19th century through to the 21st century.

Often the collections are inherited and of little interest to the vendors. Alternatively, they are albums and collections amassed by the owners, usually when they were younger. The good news is that in today’s market, stamps and related items are in fashion and they perform well in our regular collector’s auctions with high prices achieved selling to collectors and dealers.

If you have a collection of stamps contact Richard Bromell at our salerooms 01935 812277 or send Richard a selection of images to info@charterhouse-auction.com and he will get back to you with a valuation.

All of our auctions use live internet bidding platforms to ensure that every lot, whether it is worth £20 or £500,000, reaches the widest possible market and sells for the best price possible. In the run up to an auction we receive 100’s of emails requesting further information for lots in the sale. Attached to these email replies, we regularly send well over 1,000 digital images, such is the huge interest generated in our auctions.

A rare Queen Victoria One Shilling stamp, with Board of Education overprint, sold for £800
A 1929 Postal Union Congress £1 stamp, part of an album of GB stamps sold for £1,500
Two Bermuda stamps, from an album of Commonwealth stamps, sold for £1,100

Wine, Port & Spirits

DepartmentSell SomethingSelling with CharterhouseWhere to Find Us

Our wine, port & spirits department is run by David Baines.

David is a Wine & Spirits Education Trust Wine Educator, a Fellow of the British Institute of Hospitality and The British Institute of Innkeepers. He has decades of experience and always has top tips of what is good to drink and what is good to lay down.

Over the years, we have been instructed to sell a broad range of wine, port and spirits, with single boxes to sealed and unopened cases. Perhaps one of the more unusual single bottles we sold was a bottle of 1937 Moet & Chandon champagne. By repute, it came from Hitler’s personal cellar (although rather interestingly Hitler was teetotal). However, what was not known was whether the Nazis added cyanide to it when retreating! On the auction day there was huge interest in this single bottle and it sold for a Scandinavian TV company for an astounding £1,700.

If you have a single bottle, group of bottles or a case (or two), contact David Baines at our salerooms 01935 812277 or send him lists or images to info@charterhouse-auction.com and David will contact you with a valuation.

Collection and shipping throughout the UK is easily arranged with Benelux Shipping. They are specialist wine couriers and do not ship anything else! We regularly use them finding their charges very reasonable. Contact them for a quote benelux@talk21.com or 01823 660645.

All of our auctions use live internet bidding platforms to ensure that every lot, whether it is worth £20 or £500,000, reaches the widest possible market and sells for the best price possible. Works of Art

DepartmentSell SomethingSelling with CharterhouseWhere to Find Us

Works of Art

Works of Art cover a broad range of disciplines, from bronzes through to carved ivory.

Every month we sell many Works of Art lots, and as in many auctions, there are always a few surprises, such as a Chinese carved ivory glove box. Taken to a charity shop as a pile of bits, we put it back together and sold it for £2,200.

When we are out and about visiting clients, we also have to wander around the gardens, which is where this bronze figure of a girl was found. Brought in from the cold, there was hot bidding and she sold for £900.

However, we often come across lots, whilst they are not of high value, they generate high levels of pre-auction interest. One such lot, was a pair of mid Victorian rosewood work boxes. With similar individual boxes being worth less than £100 each, it was rare find a pair. Probably originally bought for a mother and daughter, or maybe sisters, they romped away selling for £450, with many under bidders walking away disappointed but with the vendor left being very pleased with the result.

All of our auctions use live internet bidding platforms to ensure that every lot, whether it is worth £20 or £500,000, reaches the widest possible market and sells for the best price possible. In the run up to an auction we can receive over 1,000 emails requesting further information to lots in the sale. Attached to these email replies, we regularly send out over 5,000 digital images, such is the interest generated in our auctions.

Furniture

DepartmentSell SomethingSelling with CharterhouseWhere to Find Us
There has been much adverse publicity about “brown furniture” and it is an expression which we hear on a regular basis. However, to us, all furniture is “brown” unless it is painted. Yes, there has been an adjustment in the furniture market over the past few years, but the market for good quality items, whether period or later, continues to grow. Combine this with realistic pre-auction estimates, we see high selling rate with some very strong results.

To prove the above point, we have sold a late 18th century mahogany tripod table for £7,500, a mid 18th century Irish mahogany “silver” table for £35,000 and a mid 19th century inlaid walnut centre table (purchased from an auction for £1,000 where they did not use live internet bidding) which sold for £5,000.

All of our auctions use live internet bidding platforms to ensure that every lot, whether it is worth £20 or £500,000, reaches the widest possible market and sells for the best price possible. In the run up to an auction we receive 100’s of emails requesting further information for lots in the sale. Medals

DepartmentSell SomethingSelling with CharterhouseWhere to Find Us
Medals have always been a big part of Charterhouse auctions. Richard Bromell, Director, was taken (or dragged) around medal & militaria fairs and auctions as a child by his father who had a huge passion for collecting.

Moving forward nearly 50 years, the interest and enthusiasm Richards’s father had has rubbed off onto Richard and he now heads up the medal, militaria, coins and stamp division at Charterhouse. Medals sold by Charterhouse are researched to make certain they bring their full potential.

Although medals can look the same, values can differ hugely depending upon rank, regiment, campaign and citation. A good example of this could be a pair of WWI medals. A pair awarded to a Private who served with The Royal Engineers, could sell for under £100, but a pair which look identical, but awarded to an Australian Gallipoli casualty could sell for over £2,000. We often sell medals straight from the family, and the highest price paid for a medal group at Charterhouse was sold for the son of the recipient.

The medals sold were awarded to Ft Lt Richard Trevor-Roper. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his part in The Dambusters Raid as Guy Gibson’s rear gunner in the lead Lancaster. The medal group sold for an astonishing £148,000 to a collector. If you have a medal or group of medals, contact Richard Bromell at our salerooms 01935 812277 or send him images to info@charterhouse-auction.com and Richard will get back to you with a valuation.

We have always had a keen interest in this subject, which is not every auctioneer’s cup of tea. As a result, with our expert knowledge, we are able to quickly research and value lots placing them in our regular specialist auctions. With a loyal following too from bidders around the world, and especially from one particular Russian internet bidder, we achieve some exceptional prices such as a 19th century presentation Shamshir sword, which we sold for £12,500.

For further information regarding this article, or to consign an item to auction, please contact Richard Bromell, Director, at rb@charterhouse-auction.com, or on 01935 812277, as he is particularly interested in all things military.

Manner of El Greco, which had lain hidden in an attic, sold successfully for £98,000

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or so they say. We regularly hold specialist picture auctions with lots receiving enquiries and bids from around the world.

This combined with live internet bidding has resulted in some huge prices achieved, such as a small oil painting on a panel in the manner of El Greco of a Saint which came out of an attic. A real Antiques Roadshow discovery moment, it featured in our international trade paper and generated great pre-auction interest. On the day, a fierce bidding war got under way with the hammer falling to a London gallery at £98,000.

Another painting which sold very well, came out of a cottage where it had hung for many years. The owner had previously been advised by one of the large International auction houses at £20,000. Again, we featured the painting in our trade paper which drew in many dealers and collectors to the sale where the hammer came down at £61,000.

If you think you have a masterpiece hanging on your wall, whether you have inherited a watercolour, or if you have a pile of pictures hidden away in the attic, contact Richard Bromell or George Holtby at our salerooms 01935 812277 or send them images to info@charterhouse-auction.com

Silver

DepartmentSell SomethingSelling with CharterhouseWhere to Find Us
Charterhouse hold four specialist jewellery, watch and silver auctions per year which are always very well attended by both members of the public and the trade, ensuring constant impressive results and a very high selling rate. The late 20th century designer market is particularly buoyant at the moment.

Our specialist has over 30 years of experience in the field and is fully conversant with all types of silverware, whether it be a rare Scottish provincial spoon, a Georgian tea service by Paul Storr, an early 20th century Chinese tea caddy by Luen Wo of Shang Hai, or an elaborate silver-gilt candelabra by Stuart Devlin.

Valuations for auction, probate, family division or insurance can be carried out in house, at a client’s home for larger collections or at a safe deposit facility.

All of our auctions use live internet bidding platforms to ensure that every lot, whether it is worth £20 or £500,000, reaches the widest possible market and sells for the best price possible. In the run up to an auction we receive 100’s of emails requesting further information for lots in the sale.
