European Ceramics

DepartmentSell SomethingSelling with CharterhouseWhere to Find Us
Charterhouse were very pleased to sell an Italian maiolica istoriato pottery charger for a staggering £460,000 plus premium and VAT, despite having a chip.

We visited the client in a Somerset cottage who wanted to downsize and move near to her family. Amazingly, this pottery charger, which dates to 1540, was mounted in a coat hanger wire frame and hung on a wall behind the kitchen door. Having removed the charger from the wall, it was taken back to our salerooms where research started to properly identify the charger. After several months of research, the charger was entered into an auction dedicated to it, such was the importance of this one lot.

Viewing for this Italian charger, which tells the story of King Herod and Salome, was by appointment only, with many dealers, academics and collectors making the journey to our salerooms. On the auction day, there was not much standing room and even our Town Mayor made an appearance. The hammer finally fell at £460,000 to a Bond Street dealer bidding on the telephone.

All of our auctions use live internet bidding platforms to ensure that every lot, whether it is worth £20 or £500,000, reaches the widest possible market and sells for the best price possible. In the run up to an auction we receive 100’s of emails requesting further information for lots in the sale. Attached to these email replies, we regularly send well over 1,000 digital images, such is the huge interest generated in our auctions.

Decorative Arts

DepartmentSell SomethingSelling with CharterhouseWhere to Find Us
Decorative Arts have many followers who generally stay within specific collecting fields. These cover the following periods: Aesthetic, Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, from the 1870’s through to the 1930’s.

With well known designers such as Clarice Cliff, Christopher Dresser and William Morris, collectors often stick to just one period as the styles are so different.

Discoveries made by Charterhouse include an Aesthetic Period cast iron hall stand designed by Christopher Dresser, which sold for £4,200, a roll of William Morris wallpaper, which was creased and torn, but sold for £600 to a museum, and a pair of Robert “Mouseman” Thompson oak bed ends £1,100.

Chinese and Japanese

DepartmentSell SomethingSelling with CharterhouseWhere to Find Us
There has been huge growth in the Asian market over the past few years. This is not only due to an increase in disposable income, but also the accessibility of auctions via the internet.

Many items we see and sell have travelled half around the world and survived two World Wars in various conditions. With the top pieces selling for the top prices being in top condition, we were therefore somewhat surprised when we sold a late 18th century Chinese porcelain censer sold for £125,000.

The censer had lived on top of a wardrobe in a Somerset farmhouse for several years and had gained a good covering of dust. With a broken and glued handle, and an associated cover, the client had previously been advised by another firm of auctioneers it was worth just £400. When consigned to Charterhouse, we expected it to sell for a five figure sum and it was featured on the cover of our auction catalogue. With 10 telephone lines booked from bidders in London, over to China, and across to New York, many bidders registered on line, and a corner of the saleroom full of expectant buyers, the hammer finally fell at £125,000 to a London telephone bidder.

The auction was followed with national press exposure, which turned up another Chinese censer with a new client in Northumberland. Dating to the early 19th century, being about 2/3 rds of the size, and with both handles crudely repaired, this censer sold to the same London telephone bidder at £15,000.

Another discovery on a routine valuation was a set of four Chinese porcelain panels. Two were hung on the walls, one upstairs, the other downstairs, with the other two hiding under a bed. With the owner moving into a care home, the family ask us over to help in clearing the property.

Although the panels date to around 1930, they were painted by one of China’s most important 20th century artists, and after protracted bidding, primarily from China, the hammer fell at £420,000.
All of our auctions use live internet bidding platforms to ensure that every lot, whether it is worth £20 or £500,000, reaches the widest possible market and sells for the best price possible. Carpets and Rugs

DepartmentSell SomethingSelling with CharterhouseWhere to Find Us
A small Paisley rug sold for £1,600. A Turkey Carpet sold for £4,600

Some carpets and rugs have magic qualities. That is not to say they are actually magic and can fly, but they hold magic properties which bidder are more than happy to pay for. Perhaps one of the most bizarre “magic carpet” discoveries we made was in a property near Salisbury. The client was looking to downsize, primarily to the size of the garden, and contacted us for help and advice. After family discussion we organised the collection of furniture, ceramics and other items. However, it was the carpet turned upside down in her drawing room as it was threadbare, which she offered her gardener/handy man which put a smile on her face. Thankfully he decided to decline her kind offer of a free carpet, and it was entered into one of our auctions where it sold for over £10,000. A truly magical result.

All of our auctions use live internet bidding platforms to ensure that every lot, whether it is worth £20 or £500,000, reaches the widest possible market and sells for the best price possible. In the run up to an auction we receive 100’s of emails requesting further information for lots in the sale. Books

DepartmentSell SomethingSelling with CharterhouseWhere to Find Us
A Bible, 1560, incomplete and with hand written annotations to the margins, sold to an American collector for £8,000

It is certainly true that you must “never judge a book by its cover”, as one of the great book discoveries made by Richard Bromell was a 17th century Breeches bible. It was camouflaged in a 19th century binding and looking like a Victorian bible, the content was much more valuable than a typical Victorian bible worth less than £50. Richard, who has been involved in auctioneering for nearly 30 years, spent a couple of years running a book department. Perhaps the strangest things about books is that age does not matter, as already mentioned, a 150 year old Victorian bible can be worth less than £50, but a first edition Harry Potter can sell for £25,000!! With regular specialist book sections, Charterhouse has successfully sold vast quantities of volumes over the years from single tomes to complete libraries.

For further information regarding selling books at auction, please contact Richard Bromell, Director rb@charterhouse-auction.com

Richard Bromell has over 30 years of experience within the auction world. He originally started work in The Long Street Salerooms when it was owned by Phillips. Since then, he has worked for numerous firms of auctioneers from Bearne’s in Torquay up to Tennants in Yorkshire.  If you call the office to arrange a free home visit, then it will probably be Richard who will see you at your property.  Since the 1990’s, Richard has been involved in numerous antiques television programmes including Going for a Song (with both Michael Parkinson & Anne Robinson), Going, Going, Gone, Antiques Treasure Hunt, Antiques Road Trip and Flog It!  In 2003 and 2004, Richard was nominated as one of the top four auctioneers in the country at The British Antique & Collectors Awards (BACA). This was the first time an auctioneer has been nominated for two consecutive years.  What do you love about running Charterhouse? “The huge variety of items I see every day, from silver to medals. Beswick

DepartmentSell SomethingSelling with CharterhouseWhere to Find Us

We have built up an enviable reputation for conducting specialist auctions of Beswick and Royal Doulton. This department is run by Naomi Grabham, Associate Director. Naomi comes from a farming background and her Mother and her Grandmother have been keen collectors of Beswick and Royal Doulton animals and figures for decades, so it is not entirely unsurprising that Naomi has followed in their footsteps.

As an expert, Naomi takes great pride and pleasure in identifying not only the names of the pieces she values, but also their shape numbers and numerous colour ways. Over the past few years, Naomi has been an active member of The Beswick Collectors Club and regularly attends regional meeting with other enthusiasts. This has resulted in her building up a valuable database of specialist dealers and collectors, along with Charterhouse being instructed to sell collections for clients from Staffordshire down to Devon.

For further information about Beswick and Doulton or Royal Doulton at Charterhouse, please contact Naomi Grabham at ng@charterhouse-auction.com, or at the office on 01935 812277. Naomi likes all things antique, but started her career because she fell in love with Beswick.

Stamps

DepartmentSell SomethingSelling with CharterhouseWhere to Find Us
We see 1000’s of stamps every month. Clients regularly bring in or post single us albums, boxes and complete collections of stamps for valuation. We see modern presentation packs, booklets of stamps, mint, used and postal history from the 19th century through to the 21st century.

Often the collections are inherited and of little interest to the vendors. Alternatively, they are albums and collections amassed by the owners, usually when they were younger. The good news is that in today’s market, stamps and related items are in fashion and they perform well in our regular collector’s auctions with high prices achieved selling to collectors and dealers.

If you have a collection of stamps contact Richard Bromell at our salerooms 01935 812277 or send Richard a selection of images to info@charterhouse-auction.com and he will get back to you with a valuation.

All of our auctions use live internet bidding platforms to ensure that every lot, whether it is worth £20 or £500,000, reaches the widest possible market and sells for the best price possible. A rare Queen Victoria One Shilling stamp, with Board of Education overprint, sold for £800
A 1929 Postal Union Congress £1 stamp, part of an album of GB stamps sold for £1,500
